Earlier this week I was toiling over cold press paper, perfecting my line work and clearing my mind. I shared a simple drawing of a leaf with my co-designer and she saw something that I didn't- possibilities. So we sat down together, and brainstormed an idea to bring this heartfelt sentiment of nature & sustainable beauty to all of you.
Co-creator, Taylor, uploaded my simple design & used a laser cutter to cut the basic shapes for our "Wanderess Earrings" on salvaged basswood, filling the studio with the calming scent of burning wood.
After all of the pieces have been cut and cleaned, the transformation process beings. Every piece is stained by hand using a mixture of coffee grounds and cinnamon. These natural stains are safe, non-toxic and have an aroma that is reminiscent of fall mornings.
The drying process takes some time, and leaves (so punny) beautiful coffee rings on the paper* that it is being dried on. Once our pieces dry, then we are able to commence with wire-wrapping.
*Of course, said paper will more than likely become a painting. Salvage the salvaged.
We are so pleased that these gorgeous, lightweight, and sustainable earrings will be available (in a variety of sizes and wire colors) in our shop this coming week.
Without Taylor's encouragement, these earrings would not have happened. My modest drawing would have been buried in my sketchbook for eternity. Lesson- Embrace those who see possibility where you see none, for they will keep your life beautiful, and your dreams alive.
“Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all is a form of planning.” ― Gloria Steinem
